Curator’s reflection

BC-122 is one of William Henry Broome's most explosive and emotionally charged self-portraits. The work captures a moment of raw intensity and visual outcry of the mind and spirit.

The vibrant colors radiate energy and chaos, extending outward from the figure like an eruption. Broome's face, eyes wide behind his glasses and mouth open in a silent scream, speaks of a mind pushed beyond its limits. The small grayscale window in the upper left-resembling a butterfly with wings unfurled-stands in stark contrast to the surrounding turbulence. It may represent transformation, the soul's desire for escape, or a distant world of peace glimpsed through the storm.

Broome rarely painted without purpose. This piece invites us to stand before the reality of struggle, anxiety, and inner turmoil that many face but few express so honestly. It reminds us that behind every outward image is an internal battle that leaves its mark on the soul. Through his brush, Broome turns personal pain into universal understanding.

Looking closer

  • The thick, expressive brushstrokes and intense palette create a sense of motion and emotional urgency. The contrast between the vivid eruption of color and the calm grayscale butterfly window is deliberate and powerful. Every element is placed with intention-from the spiked hair radiating outward to the wide-open mouth and eyes that convey overwhelming psychological pressure. The butterfly may symbolize transformation, hope, or a fragile escape from an inner storm.

A moment to reflect

Sometimes the soul screams in silence, while the spirit searches for wings. He left more than paintings. He left a life painted in brushstrokes.
