Curator’s reflection

In this vivid self-portrait, William Henry Broome faces the world with unflinching directness. The eyes-wide and searching behind round frames invite us into a moment of raw presence. The face emerges from a storm of color, not to escape it, but to stand within it. This is a portrait of someone fully awake to the intensity of life.

The bold, impassioned strokes create both figure and feeling. Warm reds and oranges pulse with energy, while touches of green and blue add contrast and depth. The painting feels immediate, spontaneous, and alive-an act of expression in motion.
