Gallery VI: The Figure in Color

William Henry Broome
Curator’s reflection
In this intense self-portrait, William Henry Broome presents himself in a moment of inward focus. The figure, kneeling with hands pressed together, creates a powerful image of vulnerability, confrontation, and emotional exposure. The direct gaze meets the viewer without hesitation, inviting us into an intimate space of struggle and reflection.
The deep, earthy background allows the figure’s & illuminating lines to stand out in striking relief. Fiery strokes of red, orange, and pale blue trace the contours of muscle and bone, suggesting both physical presence and inner turbulence. Broome's expressive use of color and line transforms the body into a vessel of feeling rather than a literal form.
This work may suggest themes of prayer, struggle, release, or confrontation with one’s deepest truths. The vertical form and central positioning draw the viewer directly into the work's emotional core, creating an intimate and unavoidable encounter.
Rather than offering certainty, Broome leaves the meaning open, inviting each viewer to reflect on their own moments of doubt, socking, and the quiet conversations we have when no one else is watching.
Looking closer
A moment to reflect
Some conversations happen only within ourselves in the silence where our true questions live. He left more than paintings. He left a life painted in brushstrokes.
