Curator’s reflection

BC-258 is a striking self-portrait in which William Henry Broome immerses himself in a world of intensity, symbolism, and bold self-definition. The dominant crimson palette immediately commands attention, creating a sense of heat, passion, and emotional urgency.

The feathered hat, circular yellow glasses, and substantial necklace are not simply accessories-they become extensions of identity, power, memory, and role. Broome often used such elements to explore the many personas he inhabited throughout his life. Here, he presents himself not as he might appear to others, but as he feels within.
